The lives of chronic and rare disease patients depend on the positive progress of medical discoveries. In this podcast episode, Dr. Gary K. Michelson explains how investment in innovative, high-risk research can improve patient outcomes.

After what he felt was unproductive testimony before the U.S. Congress regarding the reforming of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. Michelson realized that expecting these monolithic organizations to change from the inside out was a false hope. Instead, change would require outside organizations to apply pressure towards progress.

One way to promote progress is through investments in research led by young and promising scientists. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the largest funder of academic medical research in the world. Yet, as Dr. Michelson describes, “last year, it funded less than three percent of its money to people under the age of 35.”

Listen to this Patients Rising Podcast to learn more about Dr. Michelson’s approach, and the Michelson Medical Research Foundation programs that promote positive change.
